Home Remedies to Fade Age Spots

As we get older our bodies go through may changes. We have more aches and pains, our bones become more brittle and to top it off we start to develop age spots.

Age spots, also known as liver spots, are flat blemishes on the skin associated with aging and exposure to ultraviolet radiation from the sun. Ranging in color from light brown, red, or black and vary in size. They usually appear on the skin areas, such as the face, hands, shoulders, arms, forehead and scalp if bald, that have been exposed to the sun. Generally most common in adults older than age 50, however, younger people can develop them too if they spend a lot of time in the sun.

The name, liver spots, was once incorrectly believed to be caused by liver problems. But these spots are physiologically unrelated to the liver. Starting around age 40 our skin is less able to regenerate from sun exposure.

Although age spots in the majority of cases look like cancerous growths, they pose no threat and require no treatment. In some cases they have been known to obscure the detection of skin cancer. Many people consider them unsightly and choose to have them removed despite being a benign condition. The most common treatments are by laser removal, electrosurgery and cryotherapy.

The big question is whether or not we can safely and naturally fade our age spots. I have found some natural home remedies that can help fade dark spots over time.

Lemon Juice: apply lemon juice to your skin and let dry for about a half hour then wash off. For sensitive skin, dilute the lemon juice with water, rosemary or honey. Repeat this remedy twice daily for about two months to see positive results.

Castor Oil: using a cotton ball, apply the castor oil to the affected area and gently massage the areas for a few minutes. Leave on for a few hours then wash off. Repeat this treatment once in the morning and then again in the evening.

Aloe Vera: known for its healing and skin regeneration properties, this is an excellent treatment for getting rid of dark spots especially when caused by the sun. Gently rub aloe vera juice on the spots, leaving on for about thirty minutes, then wash off with cold water. Repeat this process twice daily for one month to see results.

Apple Cider Vinegar: has been used successfully as a natural remedy to fade dark spots. Dilute the apple cider vinegar with an equal amount of water. Apply the solution to dark spots for a few minutes then wash off. Apply once a day for several days to see desired results.

Honey and Yogurt:
when combined these two ingredients produce a bleaching agent that can help fade age spots. Mix one part each and apply mixture to the skin. Leave on for about an hour.
